What can computer security experts gain from pilots?

At the first sight computer systems and flying are completely different areas. Even though computer security experts can learn something from pilots.

Computer security is quite young if you compare it with flying and therefore it is a normal state that government is in state of establishing institutions for fighting the cybercrime. The primary target is to secure government and other state institutions such as healthcare. It is not like in flying that investigation of the accident will help all other pilots to avoid such circumstances. It is partly understandable because the results from investigation can reveal the hole to other hackers but in my opinion there must be in future stronger role of the government in fighting the hackers and helping outside of the government.

The second inspiring area for cybersecurity in flying are operation procedures. In aviation there are made standard operation procedures for normal situations, emergency situations and even servicing aircrafts. For example if your engine stops working during flight then you know you should maintain best glide speed and look for the place for emergency landing. If there is enough time you can check the fuel valves, run auxilary fuel pump and try to start engine. If the engine doesn’t start, you will close the fuel valves and you will make emergency landing to selected field.

And now tell me the truth – how many of you have a maintenance plan? How often do you verify and update it? Do you have written emergency procedures for all possible scenarios? I understand that security breach usually doesn’t cost human lives but this little extra work can prepare you for difficult situations and help you solve them correctly. That is what computer security experts can learn from pilots.
